First off, you only need one virus and malware scan program. I recommend AVG Internet Security, the paid version. It detects suspicious programs before being installed on your computer. Keep it updated and run the scan often, at least once a week.
Keep windows operating system up to date. Windows sends out updates on the second Tuesday of every month. Sometimes they have updates that come out in-between the second Tuesday. I recommend checking for windows updates once or twice a month.
A program I recommend having is Ccleaner, the free version. I would run it once a week.
Run Windows Disk Cleanup program. To do that Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. This allows you to delete files you do not need anymore. Run it once a week.
Run Windows Disk Defragmenter program. To do that Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. Over time of installing and uninstalling software some files or parts of files will be ungrouped together, causing the hard drive to take longer searching for these files. This is called fragmentation. The Disk Defragmenter Program allows your PC to run faster by grouping all the parts of the files together so that the hard disk does not have to spend time searching everywhere for all the parts of the files. I would run it once a week.
Don"t have unnecessary programs that start up when windows starts. This usually happens when you install a new software program or update it. It will tell windows to start running the program when you turn on your computer. Programs such as iTunes or adobe reader do not need to start-up when you turn on your PC. Those programs are not essential for the PC to run. Here is how to uncheck unnecessary start-up programs. Go to Start and type in "msconfig" without the quotes in the text box at the bottom. Then click on Startup tab. The only thing you need in the startup is your virus scan software (AVG) and anything that is under the Command column that says "C:WindowsSystem32". These are programs that are required for Windows to run.
Don"t have a bunch of Icons on your desktop and on the taskbar. This uses memory which will slow down your PC. To remove these icons, right click on the icon and choose delete or remove.
When installing software, I always do the customized installation instead of the express installation. The customized installation gives you options on what you can install. A lot of times when you install software there will be an option to install other things you do not need like browser toolbars such as ask, yahoo, etc, or other virus scan programs like McAfee, which you do not need. The express installation will install this stuff automatically without you knowing it until you already have it on your computer. The customized option will allow you to uncheck this and you will not install this junk.
Stay away from internet games and stuff like safe search protect programs, search programs, PC backup, speed up my PC programs, coupon and shopper saving programs, and browser toolbars such as yahoo toolbar. You don"t need stupid browser toolbars. This is a bunch of crap programs that don"t do anything but put adware, malware, popups, and junk on your PC that slows your PC down and introduces it to hackers. Most of this stuff is installed without you knowing it in the express installation. That is why you should do a custom installation so that you can uncheck the option to install this junk. One thing you might see when on a website is an ad that says something like "Is your PC slow? Click here to have free scan and speed it up." or a pop-up that says. "Your PC has a virus, click here to remove". DON"T CLICK ON IT. IGNORE IT.
Stay away from peer-to-peer music and movie downloading such as Limewire and bit torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay. I know lots of folks do it and its free, but it is also illegal to download copyrighted material. Just spend a few bucks and buy the music and movies. Do you really want to get a letter in the mail from the Motion Picture or Music association saying you will be sued tens of thousands of dollars per song or movie. It is legal to download some bit torrents but 99% of the torrents that are downloaded are illegal. Pretty much any movie or music that you normally would have to pay for in a store or on iTunes or Netflix is illegal to download. Also lots of torrents and files on programs such as Limewire are polluted with viruses, malware, spyware, and other junk.
Guys it is hard to stay away from the porn sites, but lots of porn sites are hacked and compromised and if you go there you could have pop-ups come up and lots of bad programs installed on your computer without you knowing that are viruses, malware, and other stuff that will allow a hacker onto your PC. So be careful with the porn.
Whatever browser you use and I recommend Mozilla Firefox, go to the settings and have it to not allow cookies and to delete temp files when browser closes.
Do not open emails from unknown sources or emails that have no subject. Delete them.
If you implement these things then you should be able to keep your PC running at peak performance.
