With all of the bad news in the economy recently, it seems everyone is looking for a way to save a few dollars. One big expense that most people are able to cut back on is your power bill. We all know the obvious answers, like turn off the lights when you"re not in the room, but there are many other ways to save power in your home.
- Turn off that computer: Unless you have a specific reason for leaving your computer running, shut it off when you aren"t using it. You should be able to save about $100-$200 per year doing this.
- Light Bulbs: You have to use them anyway, why not use efficient bulbs? Compact fluorescent bulbs use as much as 70% less power than their incandescent counter-parts. While the initial purchase cost is higher, they last longer and cost less to operate. Replace your incandescent bulbs as they burn out to avoid paying a huge amount up front. One note about fluorescents: they aren"t perfect. If you live in a cold climate, avoid using them outside. Also, they should not be used in a totally enclosed light fixture, and many brands will have a significantly lower lifespan when hung upside-down.
- Air Conditioner: Air Conditioners are a huge power hog. By setting your air conditioner up a few degrees higher, you will cool off that hot power bill a little.
- Washing Machines and Dish washers: While modern washers and dishwashers are very power efficient, try to run them only when they are full. You will run fewer loads and use less power and water.
- Television: Most televisions use a small amount of power even when they are off. While it is admittedly a very small amount, if you are really looking to pinch those pennies, unplug your television when not in use.
